The success of the inaugural Amarula Dorper sale held last week at Gravesend in northern New South Wales was proof that demand for good Dorper genetics is greater than ever with a clearance rate of 100 per cent and a top price of $2650 achieved from the sale of 94 stud Dorper ewes.
Amarula stud owners Justin and Lorroi Kirkby continue to strengthen their position as leading Dorper breeders which was evidenced by the high quality of offering and the demand for their breeding stock.
Landmark’s stud stock manager, John Settree said a combination of good market conditions and buyers prepared to pay for the best contributed to the excellent results.
“The average sale price was $1100 from a total of 100 stud Dorper ewes,” Mr Settree said.
“Commercial F4 Dorper ewes with 6-8 week old lambs at foot, topped at $500 to set a new national all breeds commercial ewe record, indicating the supply and demand situation that Dorpers and ewes in particular, are experiencing at the present time.”
Buying support came through Landmark Mt Pleasant (South Australia), Landmark Northam (Western Australia) and Daniel Fischer at Landmark Wangaratta (Victoria) with strong participation via AuctionsPlus and phones running hot throughout the sale. Buyer representation was from most states included Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia.
The top price ewe of $2650, which was scanned in-lamb, was picked up Dean and Cathy Roberts from Texas, Queensland and will go back into a flock of commercial breeders. Volume purchasers Peter and Lorraine Friend from Lakes Entrance in Victoria took home 12 ewes for an average price of $700. Other volume buyers from Tamworth, John and Annie Beckett, bought 10 ewes for an average price of $1200 and a top price of $1700.
