Goldfields claim opening round upset in Landmark WA Country Football Championships

The Goldfields Football League will be aiming to secure a rare A-section Grand Final appearance after defeating reigning champions South West on the opening day of the Landmark Country Football Championships on Thursday (July 9).

After winning B-section for the last two years, the GFL was promoted to A-section for this season’s championships and started strongly, taking down the SWFL 13.12-90 to 11.17-83 at Fremantle Oval, with James Murray booting five goals.

The GFL now meets 2008 A-section runners-up the Avon Football Association today, where a win will see them book a place in this Sunday’s Grand Final at Medibank Stadium.

Avon was defeated on Thursday by 2004-2007 champions Upper Great Southern 17.7-109 to 11.10-76, despite an eight goal haul from Avon’s Jermaine Davis.

UGS plays SWFL today and will also be aiming to secure a place in the A-section Grand Final. However, with a South West loss potentially leading to a B-section relegation next year, the reigning champions are sure to put up a strong fight.

In the opening round of B-section games, the Lower South West Football League defeated Mortlock 16.13-109 to 10.8-68, Eastern Districts took down Central Midlands Coastal 22.10-142 to 11.8-74, Central Wheatbelt were too good for Great Southern 20.10-130 to 7.4-46 and Great Northern defeated Ongerup 13.11-89 to 6.10-46.

C-section winners included Esperance District over Ravensthorpe 21.17-143 to 6.1-37, and North Midlands against Hills 14.5-89 to 12.7-79.

In the colts A-section competition the South West Football League and Avon Football Association qualified for today’s first semi-final at EFTel Oval, while Regional Districts and Kimberly Spirit will contest the second semi-final at East Fremantle Oval.

Colts B-section continues today (Friday, July 10) at Claremont Oval, with Great Southern undefeated at the top of the ladder after two opening round wins.
