Following last year’s defeat at the hands of South West Football League, Upper Great Southern again claimed the Landmark WA Country Football Championships A-Section title.
This is Landmark’s 35th year as the major sponsor of the WA Country Football Championships, enabling more than 17,500 people to play footy by supporting the carnival over that time to the tune of $1,355,000.
Landmark's sponsorship started in 1975 and back then Alan Quartermaine won the Sandover medal and the WAFL Premiers were West Perth. On the field, you would have seen Terry House (now President of the West Australian Country Football League) captaining the South West and Jim Krakouer playing for the Southern Districts.
Coached by Troy Leo, who was later named the coach of the carnival, Upper Great Southern beat Avon in the final by 29 points in a grand final, winning 14.7 (91) to 9.8 (62).
In other games, Lower South West scored a 15 point win over Great Northern in the battle of the B-Section.
C-Section came down to a contest between North Midlands and Esperance District, with North Midlands thumping Esperance by 81 points; 16.19 (115) to 5.4 (34).
Kimberley Spirit were defeated South West in the Colts A Section 7.4 (46) to 16.15 (111) and in the Colts B-Section, Great Southern defeated Mortlock, 21.6 (132) to 8.7 (55).
