Naracoorte calf sale gross of $1.6 million for Landmark

Landmark achieved gross sale proceeds of $1,591,098 for its clients at the annual Naracoorte calf sale over 9-10 December, the company representing some 38% of the yarding with 1,746 steers and 402 heifers on offer from a total of 5,734 mixed-sex calves.

Heralding the commencement of the South East South Australia and Western Victoria calf selling season, the magnificent lineup at this two-day event included a majority of 8-10 month old Angus, black baldy and Simmental cross calves bred by local cattle producers especially for this annual blue ribbon fixture. Many drafts carried EU status, CAAB, MN2 and all were bred using high performance stud sires from the Limestone coast area.

Landmark key account livestock manager, David Heinrich said it was a fantastic result with sale averages up to $200 per head stronger than the previous year’s offering.

“For the first time a large percentage of calves were offered on a soft floor of pine chips, providing an improvement in after-sale delivery. A noticeable increase of weaned calves met strong competition with a majority of the EU calves staying within the system,” he said.

“We saw a solid gallery of onlookers attending with interstate interest from Pakenham, Leongatha, Nhill, Hamilton, Albury, Goulburn, Wodonga and Dubbo. They were backed up by solid demand from local areas including Mt Gambier, Millicent, Lucindale, Keith, Tintinara and Adelaide. A number of processors also attended, purchasing for backgrounding or feedlotting.”

Sale toppers were a line of 15 Angus steers from S & R DiGiorgio & Sons Lucindale purchased by Landmark’s Naracoorte livestock manager Brendan Fitzgerald, on behalf of Rob and Cindy Savage, Chesapeake Pastoral Company Lochaber at $930 a head.

The sale was strongly supported by local Landmark branches by consigning breeder lines of steers or heifers, and also providing support to the Naracoorte livestock team by assisting with drafting and penning.
